Bowl sinks have been used since ancient times. They are practical and versatile. They can be made from a variety of materials, such as ceramic porcelain, copper, stainless steel, stone or concrete. They are ideal for custom applications, such as transforming a piece of furniture into a vanity or a wash station. They remain a functional choice and a classic design element.

I definitely see bowl sinks as a craze. They are fun and different. I, however, have been duped by a badly chosen faucet style/height with a bowl sink. No one wants to be soaked by the splash of an over exuberant faucet/bowl combination. I have faith the novelty will wear off.

A vessel sink can be fabulous when treated as part of the architecture of the vanity. The strongest applications are usually in powder rooms or bathrooms where the sink can create a sculptural moment. In high-use bathrooms, carefully consider the proportions, faucet placement, splash control and cleaning around the base. To me, vessel sinks are not inherently classic or craze - the “bowl on a counter” look can feel dated, but a thoughtfully integrated vessel sink in the right material, scale, and setting can still feel timeless and architectural and enduring.
