At the end of each year, many of us hold our breath and wait for a long anticipated announcement: the Pantone Color of the Year. The curiosity nearly kills us: what color will we be bringing into our homes and into our wardrobes?
This year, the 2018 color was met with some surprise: Ultra Violet. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute explained the choice simply: “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Ultra Violet.”
Whereas last year’s color, Greenery, brought us down to earth, this year’s color directs us to the sky, forcing us to focus on the future. According to Eiseman, the color suggests the “mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”
Ultra Violet is also known to be symbolic of counterculture, embodying artistic brilliance. The Institute describes it as “dramatically provocative and thoughtful,” and that the color communicates “originality and ingenuity.”
So, now is the time we put on our designer-hat, head to the store and find all of the ways we can incorporate Ultra Violet into our lives. But what if violet isn’t our favorite color? Is it just us, or is this intense shade of purple is a bit … polarizing?
For those design daredevils that have embraced Ultra Violet in a major way, kudos to you.
But let’s be honest, most of us aren’t running to buy Purple Mountain’s Majesty paint and invest in that violet velvet tufted sofa quite yet. We’re the ones still scratching our heads, wondering how we can incorporate this courageous color into our existing design scheme.
