Expert Q&A: John Erdos of Erdos at Home

What started as a hobby for self-taught furniture designer John Erdos has blossomed into a beautiful brand of functional furniture and awe-inspiring accessories called Erdos at Home. The St. Louis store recently opened and is filled with pieces that add a dose of the unexpected to luxurious home design, while transporting you to the locations that served as the muses for his four, distinct Spring and Summer collections. With a team of professionals ready to help you create the space of your dreams and a variety of stylish home furnishings ornamenting every square inch of the new shop, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Read on for insights on John’s personal style and how the trendy company came about.

SLHL: How did you choose the locations that inspired your four spring and summer collections?
John:
Palm Springs, Manhattan, the East Coast and the Hamptons are some of my favorite places to visit. The Palm Springs Collection has a mid-century modern feel with pops of color, sleek architectural elements and metallic detailing. The Tribeca Collection has a modern, industrial edge mixed with a certain contemporary elegance that helps to create a personal oasis in the midst of a busy world. The Westport Collection gives new life to classic, traditional design by using unpredictable colors and materials to make a sophisticated statement. The Hamptons Collection gives off a coastal vibe with weathered woods and forgiving fabrics that set the scene for a relaxing getaway.

SLHL: What is your design philosophy?
John:
When designing, I focus on the beauty and functionality of a piece. A sofa or chair can be absolutely beautiful, but it doesn’t serve a purpose if it’s not just as comfortable and cozy.

SLHL: How does your design philosophy and style mesh with St. Louis’ design sensibility?
John:
Gorgeous, practically designed pieces at satisfying prices are something sought after everywhere. However, certain locations seem to fall in love with particular collections. I think the Tribeca and Westport collections will really catch the attention of those in St. Louis.

SLHL: What sets your brand apart from the competition?
John:
My collections all cohesively come together as a unit even though they are all very different. This is great for customers because they can mix and match pieces to create their own unique look. I also try to incorporate unpredictable colors and patterns into my furniture and accessories that aren’t widely used in the market.

SLHL: What words best describe Erdos at Home?
John:
Accessible, friendly, strong, good-looking, satisfying and unexpected all describe what I try to accomplish when I design for Erdos at Home.

SLHL: What is your favorite piece in the spring and summer collections?
John:
The bright-orange Vanburen sofa from the Palm Springs Collection and the blue 21 Club Sofa from the Westport Collection are two of my favorite pieces.
