Is it a classic or is it a craze? For our March modern issue, we asked local design professionals about wallpaper. Here is what local professionals had to say…
CLASSIC!
“Even though the popularity of wallpaper has waxed and waned over the years I believe that wallpaper is classic. It has withstood the test of time, it has been used in both contemporary and traditional environments and it has been the perfect solution for many design applications. Wallpaper will always be used as an element in design.” Davey Mayer, Davette J. Mayer, Designer L.L.C.
“CLASSIC! Wallpaper has been an important design tool since the 15th century, and I don’t see it disappearing anytime soon. I love it in so many different applications: In a powder room or entryway, on the ceiling, as an accent wall, behind shelves for interest…. the list goes on. The patterns themselves have evolved with time and fashion from the earliest damasks and brocades, to chinoiserie, flocked, metallic, graphics, textures, etc., that now there is a wallpaper for every style of décor from the most traditional to the sleekest contemporary. Plus the paper itself has improved so that the application and removal processes are much easier and cleaner. This design element is here to stay!” Jenny Rapp, JCR Design.
“Classic, no question. It has adorned our walls for centuries, yet it keeps being reinvented with amazing patterns and textures. It can go from extremely traditional to ultra contemporary, intensely bold to remarkably subtle, and I can’t imagine design without it. Still, if you are nervous about filling your entire room, wallpapering the back of a bookcase is a great way to introduce interest without much commitment. “ Kimberly Kowalski, Savvy Surrounding Style.
“I think it is a classic because wallpaper has the advantage of adding pattern, texture or light reflective qualities unlike paint. It can give a boring powder room punch by applying a bold pattern wallpaper. A fabulous scenic paper in a dining room or an updated geometric print can make the room both cozy and interesting enhancing dining with friends and family. A simple grasscloth can add texture to a library or office. The creative qualities of wallpaper are endless.” Lynn Eastin, Lynn Eastin Interiors.
