After 18 years of using her master bath, the client was ready to breathe some fresh air into the outdated bath construction with builder-grade materials. She was seeking a relaxing space where she could get ready for work each morning and unwind after a long day. Design firm, Youtopia Designs, along with Berkley Construction focused on making the new design fresh and modern. A freestanding tub was also a must for the homeowner. As the designers got to know their client, they gained further insight into her African heritage and decided to incorporate aspects of her culture into the overall design. The first thing they did was flip the original tub and shower locations for better circulation in the room. A small, white rhombus mosaic tile was used on the shower floor, which leads your eye to the tiled, curved wall. Adjacent to the rhombus tile is an oversized wall tile that incorporates various earth tones and creates asymmetrical balance in the room. The designers interpretation of African influence is characterized with ethnic patterns on the throw pillows and rugs. They also incorporated an abstract painting featuring a woman wearing traditional accessories harkening back to the client’s heritage.

Why the judges love it: We like how the designers changed the tub and shower location to create a wet area. The curved wall behind the tub is an unexpected design detail. The use of color is very effective in the space.
