Glendale residents Kalie and Tom Baucom’s 2018 home addition created a family room, powder room and primary suite. “But our sitting room became forgotten,” explains Kalie. “However, it was where my husband and I gravitated to for peace, and we wanted to elevate that experience.”

Consequently, the couple sought advice from interior designer Megan Temple, owner of Kirkwood-based Megan Temple Design. She agreed the 12x17 foot room was underutilized as a "holding space for leftover furniture,” but recalls immediately seeing its potential to be uniquely lively.

“The Baucoms knew exactly what they wanted it to be, they just didn't know how to get there,” Megan explains. “They envisioned an adult space to read, play games, do puzzles or have quiet cups of coffee. The room’s narrow, requiring creative layout thinking.” In fact, the enclosed room is the first one entered through the front door, with a walk-through to the dining room.

During a seven-month process, Kalie says the sitting room was redone, except for flooring. “Our new wallpaper in the space is a showstopper, adding a nice punch without being overpowering. Additionally, Megan wisely chose a dining-height table that’s stunning, but extremely functional for our purposes, with stools great to sit on for games, visiting or propping your feet,” says Kalie. “Almost everything in the room feels special, intentional and fun.”

Megan says she presented three murals to the Baucoms. “We unanimously fell in love with the Rhapsody Mythical Mural by Osbourne & Little. It was colorful, happy and provided the perfect backdrop to build the rest of the room around.”

Calling her interior design style “a bit eclectic,” Megan says this sitting room was a perfect example of how she and her team love to "mix things up." So, they painted the fireplace and walls to match new furnishings and accessories.

She adds: “I'm thrilled with how everything came together, how everything has a purpose. The caned chairs flanking the fireplace are for additional seating or pulling up to the game table when entertaining. The coral velvet stools have a dual function of seating or ottomans to kick your feet up when reading.”

Megan says they wanted to maximize seating and function in this small space. “I think we achieved that.”

The designer says working with the Baucoms was a dream. “They knew what they wanted out of the space but were happy to let us take the lead. They trusted our vision, trusted the process and made quick decisions. It doesn't get any better than that.”

Kalie confirms Megan’s upfront, detailed process was fun, and that their likes or dislikes were seamlessly blended from two, fairly different style preferences into a cohesive room she and Tom both adore.

“My husband was initially skeptical about using an interior designer, but after our experience with Megan and her team, he discovered he enjoyed the process,” Kalie assures. “We’re looking forward to tackling our next project with her.”
