Challenge: To design a sophisticated, spa-like bathroom with contemporary style while enhancing storage space – without altering the original footprint of the room.

Solution: While the original bathroom was well-planned, it lacked the richness, sleek styling and functionality the homeowners desired. With that in mind, the first steps of the bath remodel began. “Our goal is to know the clients as well as possible at the front end of the project so that they are saying to us, ‘It’s as if you read my mind,’” says Kris Keller, president and owner of The Design Source, Ltd. “By engaging our clients in the process, the action plan started to take shape.” To make the shower experience feel more like a day at the spa, an expansive soffit was placed over the existing shower area, which was then enclosed by updated frameless glass. Heightening the cabinetry and angling the corner cabinetry allowed space for a drawer stack in the center of the vanity. Unique double mirrors, architectural pendant lighting and heated floors complement the bath retreat. “By selecting natural materials that were very neutral and soothing, we were able to make the space feel larger (within the same square footage),” says Kris, who chose a natural limestone for the floor tile and countertops. The pale, warm blush color of the stone surfaces contrasted with the highly lacquered wood cabinetry in a warm russet-stained maple. For privacy, plantation shutters were used with a contemporary mix of plum, cream and grayed sage for the custom-designed Roman valance.
